Women remain significantly underrepresented in renewable energy and engineering. Here's how GTS Hub's 50% female participation target is changing that.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, women represent less than 25% of the renewable energy workforce. In technical and engineering roles, that figure drops further. The reasons are well-documented: limited access to technical education, social norms that discourage girls from STEM pathways, and a lack of visible female role models in the sector.
At Green Transition Skills Hub, we have made a deliberate commitment to change this — and our 50% female participation target is at the centre of everything we do.
The Case for Gender Equity in Green Energy
This is not simply a social justice argument — though that argument is compelling on its own. There is a strong economic case. Research consistently shows that diverse teams perform better, generate more innovative solutions, and deliver stronger outcomes. In the context of community energy access — where women are disproportionately affected by energy poverty — having women at the centre of solution design makes those solutions better.
“When a woman installs a solar system in her community, she does not just connect a home to power. She becomes a reference point, a role model, a proof that this is for everyone.”

How GTS Hub is Closing the Gap
- 50% female participation target embedded into all cohort recruitment
- Girls at Ease confidence-building events prior to technical training
- Female mentor pairing during the GSEI programme
- Targeted outreach to girls in SHS and TVET schools through GTAP
- Safe, supportive learning environment with female facilitators
- Post-training employment and enterprise support for female graduates
What We Have Seen
In our early cohorts, female participants consistently match or outperform male participants in technical assessments. Many go on to the entrepreneurship track and establish their own green businesses. Several have become outreach ambassadors — returning to their schools and communities to inspire the next group of girls.
The pipeline is not broken. It just needs to be built — intentionally, systematically, and with genuine commitment. GTS Hub is building it.
